Project Overview
A fertilizer manufacturing facility located near agricultural fields experienced crop damage, potentially linked to groundwater contamination. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) visited the industry following complaints from nearby farmers. Upon investigation, GPCB identified non-compliance issues and subsequently issued a closure order to the industry. As a result, the facility sought the expertise of Aura Environmental Services Pvt. Ltd. to investigate and remediate the situation.

Challenge
Farmers reported significant crop damage, suspecting contamination from the fertilizer plant’s operations. Our initial investigation revealed several critical challenges.
- Groundwater contamination was confirmed through laboratory analysis of Borewell and farmland samples.
- The client’s ground-level ETP showed signs of structural failure, allowing untreated effluent to seep into the groundwater.
- Elevated salt levels in the contaminated water interfered with accurate COD measurements, complicating the remediation process.
Our Approach
Aura Environmental Services Pvt. Ltd. implemented a systematic approach to address these challenges, leveraging our expertise in environmental remediation and wastewater treatment.
- We conducted a thorough site assessment, including:
- Manufacturing Process review, mass-balance, and water-balance analysis.
- Sample collection and analysis in our NABL-accredited laboratory.
- Identification of the failing ETP as the contamination source.
Solutions
To remediate the contaminated Borewell, we:
- Extracted around 65,000 liters of contaminated groundwater.
- Recharged around 75,000 liters of treated fresh water, using lime, alum, and other appropriate chemicals.
- Performed constant analysis of the water during the remediation process.
- Provided a new ETP design to the client, and advice on upgrading the existing ETP.
Outcome
- Our comprehensive approach resulted in a successful remediation and long-term environmental improvement for the client.
- Significant reduction in groundwater contamination, confirmed by post-remediation analysis.
- Improved environmental compliance and community relations for the client.
- Delivery of a detailed report and recommendations for ETP maintenance and upgrades.
- Provision of a new ETP design, fit for the client’s effluent.
- Long term remediation of the groundwater.
- GPCB successfully revoked the closure order on submission of the Schedule-1 Auditor authorized bore well remediation report prepared by Aura Environmental Services Pvt. Ltd.
